The Meier Collection consists of correspondence from Ada Lawrence Meier, wife of Edwin Meier, to her sister-in-law, Irene. The letters, envelopes, and postcards are decorated with advertisements for local merchants and scenes from downtown Commerce. The Miscellaneous Items folder contains a brief genealogical sketch of the Meier family, newspaper clippings, and a receipt made out to East Texas Normal College founder, W.L. Mayo, for a week's supply of bread for the college. Photographs include interior shots of the bakery in Commerce and a photograph of L.C. Meier's bakery in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.
Edwin John Meier was born in Winchester, Indiana, on July 24, 1884. In 1906, he moved to Commerce, Texas, and opened the Model Bakery and Manufacturing Company on Main Street with his brother, J.C. Meier. Edwin married Ada Lawrence on December 17, 1907. J.C. Meier went on to open another bakery in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. The Model Bakery and Manufacturing Company supplied several hundred loaves of bread a week to East Texas Normal College.
